Golf simulator ceiling height: how high is enough?
Enter your height to see the minimum ceiling and the height that gives a comfortable driver swing. The numbers build on Shop Indoor Golf’s table and how high the clubhead goes at the top of the swing.

How we work it out
The minimum comes from Shop Indoor Golf’s table: 2.74 m (9 ft) for golfers under 178 cm (5 ft 10 in) with a flat swing (2.9 m, 9 ft 6 in, with an upright swing), 3.05 m (10 ft) for 178–188 cm and 3.2 m (10 ft 6 in) above that. For a comfortable swing we add 1.4 m (4 ft 7 in) to your height and never go below Shop Indoor Golf’s recommended height (3.05 m up to 188 cm, 3.35 m above): the clubhead rises about 0.9–1.2 m above your head at the top of a driver swing, then come the mat (3–7 cm) and 15–30 cm (6–12 in) of clearance.

If your ceiling is low
- Test with your longest club: Rapsodo suggests measuring how high the clubhead goes at the top of your backswing and follow-through, and allowing 6–9 in (15–23 cm) more than that.
- Lower ceilings may call for a flatter swing or leaving the driver in the bag (Shop Indoor Golf).
- A thinner mat gives back a few centimetres: the SIGPRO Softy LITE is 3.2 cm against 6–7 cm for the thickest.
- Measure under lights, beams and garage-door rails, not just to the ceiling.
Frequently asked questions
Is an 8 ft (2.44 m) ceiling enough for a golf simulator?
For most adults, not for a full driver swing. Shop Indoor Golf gives 8 ft as the absolute minimum, and Carl’s Place calls 8–9 ft “limited swings”. Shorter golfers with flat swings may manage; most will stick to irons and wedges.
Is a 9 ft ceiling enough?
For golfers under about 178 cm (5 ft 10 in) with a flat swing, it meets Shop Indoor Golf’s minimum. Taller players, or anyone with an upright swing, will want 10 ft or more for a driver.
Do ceiling-mounted launch monitors need a higher ceiling?
Not necessarily. The mount has its own height, from about 2.65 m (8 ft 8 in) for the ProTee VX to 2.9 m (9 ft 6 in) for the Foresight Falcon, but you still need room for your swing and the unit hangs below the ceiling. Whichever is higher applies.
